The following routes are the result of our own travels and the vast amount of suggestions from my visitors.

Suggested itineraries in the Saronic and Argolic gulf

There are several good one week cruises or itineraries in the Saronic and even a visit to the Argolic Gulf is possible in one-week. However, a two weeks itinerary opens up much more possibilities enabling you to see three times as much:

  1. Sea-urchins are a delicacy in Greece The beautiful ports of the Argolic are well in reach.
  2. The possibility of onshore excursions.
  3. Less time spent near the concrete outskirts of Athens.
  4. A better chance to avoid the Saronic charter milk run.
  5. Needless to say I nearly always opted to cruise the Argosaronic gulf for two or three weeks each time.

These itineraries are biased towards tranquil and unspoiled ports rather than touristy hubs like Tiros or Porto Heli.

Suggested itineraries in the Cyclades

To thoroughly enjoy the richness of the Cycladic islands you need at least 20 to 25 sailing days. But already a two-week itinerary opens up much more possibilities, thus enabling you to see three times more than in a single week. When sailing 14 days:

  • The most attractive islands of Amorgos, Sifnos, Folegandros, Santorini as well as the Little Cyclades below Naxos are well in reach.
  • More opportunities to explore the often very worthwhile inlands of the islands by scooters or bikes.
  • Less time spent near the concrete outskirts of Athens.
  • A better chance to avoid the loads of fellow yachtsmen who are often herded (in flotillas) along the easy milk runs near Athens, Kea, Kythnos and Syros.

Similar to my Ionian or Saronic routes, these Cyclades itineraries have an “off the beaten track” character and are certainly biased towards natural beauty, sequestered anchorages and ancient archaeological sites.

Suggested islands

Kea

Sea chart of Kea islandΚέα or Tzia - Τζια, the most westerly of the larger Cyclades, lies some 12 nm south-east of Cape Sounion. The island’s agriculture and the traditional harvesting of acorns for use in tanning have declined as a result of emigration. There is a certain amount of tourist traffic from the Greek mainland.

On the south side of Nikolaos Bay – which was a pirate stronghold in the 13th c. – is the little port of Korissia (also known as Livadi), built on the side of ancient Koressia. There are remains of the ancient town walls and a Sanctuary of Apollo. The Kouros (statue of a youth) of Kea (530 BCE) which was found here is now in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens.
North of Korissia, at the seaside resort of Vourkari, stands the little Church of St Irini, amid the remains of a strongly fortified ancient city (3rd millenium BCE – 3rd c. AD), including the oldest temple found in Greece. (15th c. BCE).

The famous lion – carved from the native rock in the 6th c. BCE – can be seen just north-east of Kea town. And another highlight is the beautiful anchorage of Poleis.

Folegandros and Sikinos

OΦολέγανδρος, between Milos and Santorini, is still barely touched by the tourist trade. The cliff-fringed eastern part of the island, with its highest hill of 413 m is bare and arid; the western half is milder, with water from springs, and supports a modest terraced agriculture. With its poverty and lack of sheltered harbours Folegandros was never an island of any importance. Its destinies were closely linked with those of Naxos and in Roman times it was a place of exile.

From the sailing port of Karavostasi – a must-see when sailing in Greece - it is an hour’s walk or a short trip with the only taxi on the island to the chief place, Chora, a beautiful village of typical Cycladic houses with a medieval Kastro.
